读诗|吉卜林：如果

拉迪亚德·吉卜林（Rudyard Kipling），1865 年生于印度，英国作家，诗人。
19 世纪90年代，他在英国蜚声文坛。他的前半生都穿梭往返于这两个国家之间。吉卜林一生共创作了八部诗集、四部长篇小说、二十一部短篇小说集和历史故事集，以及大量散文、随笔、游记等。他的作品简洁凝练，充满异国情调，尤其在短篇小说方面，是无与伦比的。
马克·吐温曾盛赞吉卜林的作品，“我了解吉卜林的书……它们对于我从来不会变得苍白，它们保持着缤纷的色彩；它们永远是新鲜的。”
由于“观察的能力、新颖的想象、雄浑的思想和杰出的叙事才能”，1907年，他被授予诺贝尔文学奖，是英国第一位获此殊荣的作家。两年以后，他写下了这首《如果》，寄语12岁的儿子约翰。几年后，约翰不幸死于“一战”中的一场战役，但是这首诗却成为一种激励，广为流传。
“它不单单是给予孩子忠告的诗句，而且适合在人生的任何阶段给任何人听——如果你愿意聆听。
如果众人皆醉并归咎于你，
你仍能保持头脑清醒；
如果众人都怀疑你，
你仍能相信自己并体谅他们；
如果你肯耐心等待并不烦不燥，
或者被人欺骗却不报以欺骗；
或者被人忌恨却不以牙还牙，
但也既不强装大度，也不夸夸其谈。
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:
如果你有梦想却未耽于梦想；
如果你能思考却未止于思考；
如果你大起大落却能宠辱不惊；
如果你听见所言真相被无赖歪曲以欺愚人，
或看到毕生心血毁于一旦，
仍能挺住并俯下身来筚路蓝缕再启山林；
If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:
如果你能倾其所有孤注一掷，
一败涂地而能从头再来，
只字不提自己的损失；
如果你能在身心俱疲时，
动心忍性以伺转机，
在一无所有而只有意志告诉你“坚持住！”时，
仍能坚持下去；
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’
如果你与群氓谈笑仍能独善其身，
与王公为伍仍能平易近人，
如果或敌或友都伤不了你，
如果人人对你都很重要，却又没那么重要；
如果你能分秒必争，
不浪费稍纵即逝的光阴，
你就拥有了整个世界，
更重要的是，你就成了真正的男子汉，我的孩子！
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!
