pet name的意思可不得宠物的名字，而是 an informal name given to someone by their family or friends，是给亲近的人起的“爱称，昵称”，是人的名字。如果真想说“宠物的名字”应该是pet's name.
举个例子
Their father had pet names for all his family members.
他们的父亲给所有家庭成员起了昵称。
be sb's pet

be sb's pet可不是要做某个人的宠物...而是指“是（某人的）宠儿”，to be the person that someone in authority likes best and treats better than anyone else, 成为当权者最喜欢的人，待遇比任何人都好。最常见的就是 teacher's pet, 指“得意门生；老师的宠儿”。
举个例子
The other children hated her because she was the teacher's pet.
别的孩子都恨她，因为她是老师的宠儿。

pet还可以做动词使用，意思是“抚摸，爱抚，轻按”。If you pet an animal, child, etc., you touch it, him, or her gently and kindly with your hands.
举个例子
Our dog loves to be petted and tickled behind the ears.
我们的狗喜欢人在它耳后抚摸、挠痒。
pet peeve

pet做形容词时，常用的有以下短语：pet theory / pet subject / pet hate, 意思是 a theory/subject/hate that is special and important to you, 对你来说特别而重要的、特别喜欢的理论/话题/特别讨厌的事物。
这里要提一下pet hate “特别讨厌的事物”, 这是英式英语的说法，而在美式英语中，有一个意思相同、可以完全替换的短语pet peeve. peeve是动词，意思是“惹恼（某人）”。
举个例子
My pet peeve (= pet hate) is cleaning the bathroom.
我最讨厌的事情就是打扫浴室。
pet-friendly

pet-friendly 并不是友好的宠物，而是对宠物友好的，used to describe a place that is suitable for pets or where you can stay with your pet, 用于形容一个场所或住处欢迎宠物的。
举个例子
You can find lists of pet-friendly motels on the internet.
你可以在互联网上找到一长串欢迎宠物的汽车旅馆。
pet-sit

pet-sit 是现在一种非常受欢迎的兼职，指的是 to take care of someone's pet while that person is away from home, 当某人离家时替TA照看宠物。所以，“（替别人）照看宠物的人，宠物保姆”就是在 pet-sit 后加-er，也就是pet-sitter.
举个例子
From now on she'll find another pet sitter when she travels.
从现在起，她外出旅行时会另外去找一名宠物保姆。
而 pet-sitting 是名词形式，是the act of taking care of a someone's pet while that person is away from home，也就是“宠物托管、（替别人）照看宠物”。
举个例子
I know people with advanced degrees going into pet sitting or dog grooming.
我知道有高学历的人去做宠物托管或者狗狗美容这样的工作。
另：groom的意思是“擦洗，刷洗（动物）”，所以 dog grooming 的意思就是给狗狗美容。
再另：如果把pet替换成baby也是可以的，babysit就是“（去别人家）代人临时照管孩子，当临时保姆”的意思，babysitter就是“保姆”。
