Today we will introduce certain terms on the theme of "Gender-Friendly City Planning", which is the theme of 2023 No.1 issue of our journal. And if you are interested in the four papers on the theme, please leave your message.

Gender Equality (性别平等)

Gender equality means that everyone, regardless of gender, enjoys the same conditions to fully realize their human rights and can equally participate in and benefit from political, economic, cultural, and social development activities. In the Chinese context, it is often expressed as "equality between men and women.” On the Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing in 1995, the Chinese government solemnly declared to the international community that equality between men and women is a basic national policy to promote China's social development. Since then, the concept of gender equality has been gradually incorporated into the legal system and public policy, leading to a significant improvement in women's social status and rights protection. The average life expectancy of women in China is 80.88 years in 2020, which is 44.18 years higher than that in 1949.

Integrated Community (完整社区)

The concept of integrated community was firstly proposed by Wu Liangyong, a professor of Tsinghua University and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, who took it as the basic living place with complete equipment of both hardware and software. According to the Guidelines for the Development of Integrated Residential Communities issued by China's Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development in 2021, it refers to a residential community of appropriate scale that is equipped with a complete set of basic public service facilities, commercial service facilities, civil infrastructure, and public space within a walkable distance, as well as a full coverage of efficient property and community management, all of which help provide local residents with a strong sense of belonging and identity.

Renovation of Old Urban Residential Neighborhoods (城镇老旧小区改造)

According to the Guiding Opinions on Comprehensively Promoting the Renovation of Old Urban Residential Neighborhoods issued by the General Office of China's State Council in 2020, old urban residential neighborhood refers to the residential areas, and standing-by residential buildings as well, in cities and counties that were built up for decades and strongly required for renovation by local residents in view of their inadequate maintenance and management, incompletion of municipal facilities, and imperfection of community service facilities. It is planned that all the listed old urban residential neighborhoods built before the end of 2000 will be renovated within the term of the 14th Five-Year Plan.
