        A Teacher’s Confession

“A man who believes lecturing is more important than writing papers is going to die tonight”, said Zhou Ding, teacher at Sichuan University who finally determined to “live rather than die in silence” after pondering it over for eight and a half years. (Note: the original text is “one would rather die than live in silence” written by Fan Zhongyan in his Answer to Mei Shengyu’s Ode to Crow). The confession was posted in the wee hours of 22nd that triggered a heated debate on the Internet.

In his confession, Mr. Zhou, winner of the first “My Favorite Top 10 Teachers” of Sichuan University, lashed out at higher institutions’ emphasis on scientific research and enrollment rather than teaching and the quality of graduates. He also slammed the increasingly administrative campuses, humble working conditions for ordinary teaching and administrative staff, and other problems faced by higher institutions. In the end of the confession, Mr. Zhou declared, “I’ll quit,” indicating he would quit teaching common courses and focus on teaching required courses. He told our reporter he did not intend to spark a heated discussion, and what he did just expressed his dissatisfaction with the standstill reform of common courses. “With every step forward, we will walk a way out over time,” he said.
